Uganda

Conversations

A large part of our work within Uganda is to educate the local community across Jinja of the dangers and signs of human trafficking. We do this through two methods, firstly through our programme Community Conversations, where we gather local leaders and important figures within the community to initiate conversations around the serious issue of human trafficking and modern day slavery, to encourage leaders within this region to put this high on their agenda whilst raising awareness.
Our second method is through healthcare training where we visit local health care centres and hospitals to educate the staff on what trafficking is and how to spot the signs. Our hope is by increasing awareness the local community will be better equipped to tackle this issue.

Dignity Pathways

For the first time in One By One history our Dignity Project has been developed into a year long curriculum within schools across Jinja, and will be known as Dignity Pathways. The lessons are delivered to both girls and boys covering important topics surrounding modern day slavery such as, trafficking tactics, self worth and respect, as well as being equipped with resources to ensure they stay in school, similar to those of the Dignity Project. By delivering a year long programme it ensures that children have a greater insight to the dangers of human trafficking and prevents them from being exploited.

Why Uganda?

In July 2022, One By One founder and CEO Becky Murray was on a sponsored walk in Kenya when she met a young boy named George who was herding cows. She quickly discovered that George had been trafficked from Uganda and was separated from his family. This confirmed to her and the team that Uganda was next. There are thousands of lives like George who need freedom – whether it’s sexual exploitation, domestic servitude or bonded labour, we want to bring an end to abuse throughout Uganda.

Our expansion into Uganda, working with local government, law enforcement, and schools to implement a collaborative strategy, will result in bringing freedom to so many that are targeted for exploitation.
